Part 4: Divine Revelation, Acceptance, and the Rise of Bharata
The Voice from Heaven
After Shakuntala had spoken with great truth and courage, and even as she turned to leave the royal court, a divine voice was suddenly heard from the heavens. That voice, unseen yet powerful, echoed throughout the assembly.
The celestial voice declared, “The mother is but the sheath of flesh; the son sprung from the father is the father himself. Therefore, O Duhshanta, cherish your son and insult not Shakuntala. She has spoken the truth.”
“The son is the continuation of the father, and it is he who rescues the ancestors from the region of Yama. Therefore, accept this child born of Shakuntala. Because this boy is to be cherished by you, he shall be known as Bharata.”
The King Realizes the Truth
Hearing these divine words, King Duhshanta was filled with joy and relief. He immediately rose from his seat and addressed his court, saying, “You have all heard the words of the celestial messenger. I always knew this child to be my son.”
“But had I accepted him merely on Shakuntala’s words, doubts might have arisen among my people regarding his legitimacy. Therefore, I acted thus to establish the truth before all.”
With these words, the king embraced the child with deep affection. He lifted him onto his lap, smelled his head lovingly, and experienced the pure joy that only a father can feel.
Reunion with Shakuntala
King Duhshanta then turned to Shakuntala and spoke gently, “O beloved, forgive my harsh words. Whatever I said was for the sake of establishing your purity and the honor of our son.”
He welcomed her with great respect, offering her royal honors, garments, ornaments, and affection. Shakuntala, though deeply hurt before, accepted his words and was reunited with her husband.
Installation of Bharata
The king then formally accepted the child and named him Bharata, as ordained by the divine voice. He performed all the sacred rites required for a prince and installed him as the heir-apparent.
The Brahmanas chanted blessings, and the bards sang praises of the young prince. The entire court rejoiced at the union of truth, righteousness, and destiny.
The Glory of Bharata
Bharata, the son of Duhshanta and Shakuntala, grew into a mighty and virtuous king. His power was unmatched, and his chariot wheels rolled across the entire earth, conquering all regions.
He became a Chakravarti (universal emperor), ruling the world with justice, wisdom, and strength. He performed numerous sacrifices, including horse-sacrifices, and bestowed immense wealth upon the Brahmanas.
Under his rule, the earth flourished, and Dharma prevailed everywhere. His fame spread across all lands, and his name became immortal.
The Origin of the Bharata Dynasty
It is from this great king Bharata that the illustrious Bharata dynasty arose. Countless kings of immense power and virtue were born in this lineage.
The great epic Mahabharata itself derives its name from this noble king. His life stands as a symbol of truth, destiny, and divine will.
Conclusion
Thus ends the sacred tale of King Duhshanta and Shakuntala — a story of love, separation, truth, and ultimate reunion. It teaches that truth may be tested, but it can never be destroyed.
The story also reveals the eternal principles of Dharma — that righteousness, patience, and truth always triumph in the end.
